For marketers, 2020 has been a mixed bag. On the one hand, it’s been an arduous, uncertain road.

On the other, it’s pushed digital transformation — and the acceptance thereof — to the forefront. For marketing teams who were struggling to get executive buy-in for an improved martech stack, new omnichannel plan, or another digital effort, the shift to a more virtual way of living has been a boon.

Where does that leave you as things wrap up? You might be feeling spent from sprinting to keep up with this year’s continual changes. Take a beat and catch your breath. All of that effort will pay off in 2021.

In fact, with these three new year’s resolutions, you can make the most of the year ahead — while protecting your own sanity.

#1: Celebrate the big — and small

The last year was a mad dash for many. Since you probably sped past accomplishments to keep up, take the time now to reflect on all you made happen in 2020.

Maybe you were able to automate a single process, implement one new solution, or integrate a new platform. Those are all huge wins. Look back and take stock. Celebrate what you pulled off in one of the wildest years any of us can remember.

If you brought a whole digital marketing experience to life as everyone stayed home and accessed your brand digitally, all the more reason to celebrate.

Either way, you did a lot this year. Cheers to you!

So you can keep your chin up and keep tabs on your progress, make a list of everything you made happen in 2020. Then, pull out that list periodically. Track ROI on what’s successful, and don’t be afraid to pivot on what isn’t. As Henry Ford said, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”

#2: Dream big — not small

Where do you want to go from here? Envision your ideal team, martech stack, process and data flow — picture it all.

Don’t be afraid to dream big. If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that we can do things that might feel impossible now.

So, what’s standing between you and that dream? Drill down and figure out where you’re lacking traction where the rubber meets the road.

Here are some questions to help you figure out where your dreams might need some support to come to life in 2021:

  • Which processes have bottlenecks?

  • How can efficiencies be created?

  • Can technology help?

  • How do you envision the make-up of your team changing in 2021 and beyond?

  • What’s the ideal state of your marketing world?

  • Where is data flowing from? Where is it traveling to?

  • What are your goals?

Hold space for yourself to climb out of the trenches. Get a bird’s eye view and resolve to make 2021 your marketing team’s best year yet.

#3: Sleep on that dream

Feeling overwhelmed? Dreaming big is fun, but it can also be daunting. When you look at the big picture, you pan out to see all the small areas that need attention.

Don’t worry. You have a whole year — and more — to act on those things.

Before you jump in, check in with yourself. Find your calm. You might need a break before you get back to it. By giving yourself time to rest, you actually boost your productivity long-term.

You can’t drive to the next marker if your tank is on empty. If 2020 took its toll on you, resolve to make space next year (or right now) to slow down so you can catch your breath.

Taking a breather doesn’t mean putting your marketing’s betterment on pause. In fact, our team is here to bring your dreams to life for you.

Let’s meet — virtually for now, but ideally in person in 2021. We can discuss the things you’re celebrating from 2020 and how to keep momentum rolling, as well as your plans for the new year. We’re here to help you explore all of your options to help you make the most of 2021.
